TweakTown Gives GIGABYTE H55N-USB3 Editor’s Choice Award

 ScreenHunter_01 Jul. 29 13.17 3036

Sean from TweakTown recently reviewed our small in size, but not small in features H55N-USB3 Mini-ITX motherboard.

What to think of the GIGABYTE H55N-USB3? It is small; very tiny to be honest. Still, this is also a very capable board. We were extremely impressed with the performance of the board even given the consumer level CPU in it.

For now, we can and will highly recommend the GIGABYTE H55N-USB3.

Take a look over at TweakTown to read the full review and make sure to check out the truly impressive performance numbers as the H55N-USB3 beats out some other full sized boards, even some that are overclocked.

Week 9 Winner of a GIGABYTE X58A-UD7 Motherboard Announced

Lord Hypoglossal

Lord Hypoglossal (Karthik Krishnan) is this week’s winner of the Search for GIGABYTE’s #1 Biggest Fan Contest on Facebook. This week’s question was: What is the most important feature(s) on a GIGABYTE X58 motherboard that would make you consider getting an upgrade for? For example, multiple graphics support, high performance, energy savings, motherboard cost...etc.

Karthik’s answer:

Lets be honest. We're talking about an upgrade here, we're not talking about what is affordable. I possibly can't represent the masses because I do not mind paying the premium if it leads to exclusivity and added performance over the average selection.
That said, personally for me, the criterion that interests me over selection are the following:

1) Stability
I'm an avid overclocker. Messing with the voltage supply to get that extra push. Stable motherboards are needed to push it to the extreme. Although voltage values are small, the difference from heat produced and the ability of the board to boot up successfully and stably is of great concern.

2) Performance
Why choose a gigabyte over any other offering? Obviously the tag meant for overclocking that gigabyte carries over enthusiasts and the fact that gigabyte motherboards top the overclocking charts ever so often is a simple sign.

3) Reviews
Before purchasing anything, I always read reviews from multiple sites. I tend to make my decision based on these reviews. If the reviews are good, it helps my decision making become that much easier. Of course some reviews become unrealistically bias and ridiculous, but having read reviews from multiple sites often help offset the difference.

4) Warranty
This is my main beef with most motherboard makers. Warranty is the most important thing to an overclocker, and especially warranty that is not voided by overclocking. There are so many motherboards in the market claiming to be "overclock ready" and the disclaimer claims that the warranty will be void if there is overclocking done? Cheap marketing tactics and unhappy customers won't let a business survive long.

Basically, those are my 4 important rules to upgrading. Note that pricing does not make a difference here because, if you're upgrading, you're expecting a boost in performance that is significant. Unless if your computer is 5-10 years old, an upgrade from an existing system won't come cheap. Multiple graphic card support for me is not a big deal because I fail to see a need to go beyond 2 cards. I personally do not believe there is any significant benefit for me for what I use my computer. Sure I fold, but I don't think I need 4 graphic cards for that.

How to make a motherboard - a GIGABYTE factory tour video with voice over

naping (2)

Trouff and Xyala from Overclocking-TV asked if they could take a tour of the GIGABYTE factory in Nanping, Taiwan in the days that followed Computex 2010. This Nanping factory is one for the most pictured and videoed high-tech factories simply because it is one of the few that actually allow visitors to take a camera inside.

Back in 2006, GIGABYTE started our quality drive when we introduced all solid capacitors on our motherboards. Ever since then we have continued to introduce better quality components and procedures, and this trend will continue long into the foreseeable future. This confidence behind our mobo quality is a large part of why we decided to allow cameras in our factory – you can see how every single motherboard is tested and quality checked continuously throughout the assembly process.

This video is unique due to Trouff’s voice over commentary that explains each step of the process, combined with some never seen before shots of the assembly lines from the creative cameraman, Xyala. Enjoy.

Rollercoaster day in overclocking community, No1 OCer on HWBOT Andre Yang banned for 1 year for result sharing!

Although HWBOT is not involved in this competition, we feel it’s our duty to stand up for the sake of the community and take actions based on what happened in the Lords of Overclocking competition. By sharing scores, you don’t only commit fraud in the competition, but also hurt overclockers from our small community that are trying to win this ticket by working hard to achieve their goal. This is something that no overclocking community, how small it may be, should tolerate. Therefore, we issue a 1-year ban to all the people involved: AndreYang, Hiwa, eXtremetweaker.de, KJ and Skinnee.

XtremeSystems Forum, the home of extreme overclocking, took an even more extreme decision and gave Andre Yang a lifetime ban.

GIGABYTE admits mistake and gives Ronaldo and Lalo another chance in the Go OC North American regional final

Go OC 2010 is well on its way and the China, Pan Asia & Africa, Latin America and Euro regional finals have all been completed. In each event the CPUs used were B1 stepping Core i7 980x engineering samples (ES). We also had some B0 stepping CPUs that were used at each event for live demos. Now, those of you who have been following the 980x CPU overclocking scene will know that the B1 stepping ES samples are better overclockers than the B0 stepping samples – hence the choice of B1 for the competition.

This year, for the first time, GIGABYTE included Latin America in Go OC and as is often the case with first time events, there was a mix-up with the CPUs and three B0 steppings were mistakenly handed out together with five B1 stepping chips. As is the rule with all Go OC events, the winner, Sebastian from Columbia, was allowed to change his B0 CPU (he requested to change) and went on to win the event. However, Ronaldo and Lalo didn’t realise that they were the only ones using B0 CPUs until after the event, so didn’t feel the need to change their CPUs. Ronaldo brought this to our attention, and so with a red face we want to officially apologize to Ronaldo and Lalo for our mistake and invite them to compete at the North American Go OC regional finals on August 7th.

Ronaldo’s screenie

Ronaldo

Lalo’s screenie

Rita and her team in LA have graciously agreed to set up two more overclocking stations for the Latin Americans who will compete under the same rules as the other participants. If Ronaldo or Lalo achieve the same or higher score as the first and second place winners, they will qualify for a ticket to Taiwan to compete in the Go OC 2010 global final.

I’d like to wish Ronaldo and Lalo the very best of luck, and look forward to (hopefully) meeting them in Taiwan at the end of September.

Paul, the psychic octopus, picks GIGABYTE as favourite!

This really made my day today. I had such a great laugh after watching this little video. For those of you who enjoyed the recent FIFA World Cup (admit it Tim you liked it too :p), Paul the octopus was a hit among international media picking all German football games correctly including their defeat against almighty Spain who ended up winning the World Cup Final in the end (also correctly predicted by this creature).

Guess who Paul the octopus picked in this little motherboard battle hahahahaha….

Week 8 Winner of a GIGABYTE X58A-UD5 Announced

Rizwan Siddiquee is this week’s winner of the Search for GIGABYTE’s #1 Biggest Fan Contest on Facebook. This week’s question was: What do you do to reduce the power consumption of your PC? Or what could others do to improve their PC’s energy efficiency?

Rizwan’s suggestion for improving PC Power Efficiency:

First of all I love you Gigabyte....2nd I am an engineering student...Searching for a gud computer component is like going through every single detail of the available components...I want to build the best computer in my Town...For which i have been doing tremendous research on motherboards and other components since 8 months ...Except motherboard and Power supply i have bought everything but due to some financial problems i am still waiting to buy a core i7 1366 motherboard...Almost gone through every review site on the web..Including Anandtech , Tom's Hardware, Hardwarecanucks, newegg, tweaktown, xtremesystems, overclocker's forum and etc etc...

To build a very efficient computer one doesn't only need a gud motherboard, processor, hard disk and other components which have a gud performance, but also has a good performance:price ratio...

After long research i think the "x58a-ud5 2.0" and "x58a-ud7" is the very nice option for me..You people don't know how big fan of Gigabyte i am..Wish i could prove it by submitting pictures of mine supporting Gigabyte...:)

Since the discussion here is how to lower the power consumption of my PC, for that I have certain points to let you know..

Generally as far as i think these are some power saving ways which we people follow..

1.When PC is not in working state we can either switch to hibernation or we turn of the monitor or we even turn off the Hard disk..These functions come pre-programmed in WINDOWS.

2.We disable some physical cores through BIOS
(Supported by Gigabyte and ASUS boards for multicore processors..)

3.We use a better quality of PSU about 80+ or so.So no extra power is lost in poor quality rails in powering up the PC.

4.We buy power efficient Components like motherboards(Like Gigabyte having large number of Phase modules providing cleaner power(Being #1 in the world till date to bring out largest phase power Motherboard the X58A-UD9)),processor,Hard disk (like western digital has its green hard drive). and also power efficient VGAs.(Definitely gigabyte. I'll explain it in later part why go for Gigabyte)

5.Rarest of all , which sum THE BIG GUYS do,is to underclock their Overclocked PCs to save extra energy loss when they don't require that much of performance.

6.We put our PC or Laptops in different power saving modes(Supported in high end PCs and Laptops).

7.While i am only discussing about after sales pc power consumption stages..One cannot forget the manufacturing stages also where the company develops and creat the components...there we can embedd better performing components which have lower power consmption or rather cleaner power output...better mode of tracking the internal devices and controlling them by the means of Artificial Intelligence(although it requires various controlling units),but it can bring up the quality of the components as well as their MTBF...(Generally i am speaking about the motherboards )..Cooling system design should be taken into great account...

8.Should be designed to withstand mechanical shocks a well as Electrostatic shocks so as to overcome our daily life routines and prevent long lasting damages..

9.Last but not the least..Hook draw your power source from your neighbour's power grid..Lolzz..Don't do it,its a crime..I am kidding..:)

Now i'll explain how Gigabyte have made the above ways of powersaving techniques easy and user-friendly..

1.First thanks to Gigabyte for doing so painful R&D work and bringing out the best in the market...They are the only one who have beautifully Engineered their Boards with components like 2oz Copper PCB, which not only brings down the total internal Impedance and consume less power, but also act as a very good mode of heat dissipator , combining it with large heat sinks near the processor socket and silent pipe technology.Since posting of external links are not allowed here ,otherwise i could have shown you how efficiently gigabyte boards discipate heat when looked upon by Infrared cameras..

2.Now comes one of best model of engineering by Gigabyte...The DES energy saver..by which we can in realtime enable or disable the processor cores and save a lot amount of energy..No more boggling through BIOS to disable or enable cores multicore processors..

3.Last time i visited computer fair in my city called COMPASS, I was shocked to see that Gigabyte motherboards can detect bluetooth signals from your cell phone and act wisely to save power...there was a presentation of X58A-UD7 board. It used to go in a hibernation like state whenever the person showing the presentation used to go out of the stadium, as this fair was held in an indoor stadium..Yes my Friends this is a new technology by none other but Gigabyte..This is called AutoGreen system..Now unlike previous times when we use to go out for some reason emergently we had to take precautions of either shutting down the pc or put it to hibernate..Now it has become very easy...u just need a bluetooth dongle and a bluetooth enabled cell phone.once you are out of range, the PC thinks itself and puts itsef in lowest power consumption state..

4.When it comes to VGA, i always recommend you people to go with Gigabyte...my friend has one ASUS GTX 280 and i have GIGABYTE GV-N275UD-896H...We did benchmarking for
performance
power consumtion
Noise coming out of vga
and defintely the big thing "Money:performance(ratio)"..
Truthfully speaking performance wise my Gigabyte(GTX 275) one was a little bit backward by 2.63 points, as the asus one had a faster GPU(GTX 280)..
power consumtion was:
for asus it was ~ 173-256(W)
and Gigabyte ~139-231 (W)
(at idle conditions and full load conditions)
I did a lot of research again and found out that my VGA has a thicker 2oz copper PCB so energy loss is very less..
noise coming out of my VGA was comparatively very low..
I paid for my VGA card $219 and my friend paid $289...So as you see Gigabyte is bringing out the best products at very low price..I strongly recommend Gigabyte VGAs..They are very stable..and if they do give any probs just update the BIOS or their driver and whossssshhhhh ur problem is solved...

5.Now comes the BIG THING ...Overclocking!!!
Forget those old days when you have to go through BIOS and do a lot of tricks to make your system fast..Once again thanks to Gigabyte..It provides us with a single click Overclock and that's too in real-time..So for a newbie like me its a boon ...Just install an aftermarket cooler and click the button in your windows OS and your system is overclocked. And this facility as you all know is nothing but QuickBoost....

Wish i could win this motherboard and end my quest to build the best PC in town...
My Best Regards to Gigabyte...
Hope i can be one of your biggest fan on this planet..

I Love you Gigabyte..:)

GO OC Europe 2010 “nail biting” regional final is over, massman wins, shock exit from hipro5 & elmor!

Mallorca – Spain was the host island of this year’s GO OC European Regional final and what a final it was. Overclocking TV put on the first radio broadcast programme to complement the live stream inviting overclockers around Europe and some international guests commenting on various topics including benchmark introductions, discussions on creating a fair competition, timeframes, pretesting and hardware related dramas that go with live benching.

We witnessed a very exciting final with a close finish for the second spot with no less than three teams sharing 50 points (Turkey, Romania & Serbia) only separated by their pifast runs. Massman put on a professional show and never looked shaky in first place even though there was some doubt when he posted a poor SuperPi score which was the highest point leg of the competition. Some shock exits from this leg of the competitions include Greece represented by hipro5 and Sweden represented by Mr.Even-Elmor.

Congratulations to the top5 teams for qualifying through to GOOC World Final in September (Belgium, Turkey, Romania, Serbia & Russia)  and commiserations to all the teams that missed out.

News: GIGABYTE launches free Cloud OC and Hotkey OC utilities – overclocking GIGABYTE mobos just got even easier!

image

We are launching two free OC utilities today that will work on an extensive range of GIGABYTE mobos. Cloud OC allows you to monitor, tweak and control your system remotely from any web browser capable device (netbooks, notebook PCs, iPads, smart phones and even other desktop PCs). Possibly the most practical application for Cloud OC would be to use it to monitor and tweak OC settings on the fly during benchmarks that require you to run them in full screen mode, such as the 3D mark range from Futuremark. A normal PC setup with 1 monitor would not allow for this. You’d have to buy a 2nd display in order to keep an eye on your settings, temperatures, voltages, etc… Cloud OC is available for free and will work with your netbook or smart phone, and most PC enthusiasts have at least one of those…

We have prepared a press release, video and microsite with additional info. Netbooknews.com, Overclocking-TV and HKEPC have also prepared some videos for your reference.

image

Hotkey OC allows you to jump between system profiles on the fly, i.e. while the benchmark is running. These profiles can be set using GIGABYTE’s EasyTune 6 utility, and then Hotkey OC simply allows you to assign specific keyboard keys to up to 4 profiles. It was designed for benchmarks such as 3D Mark 06 that run two graphics tests, then two CPU tests and then another two graphics shader tests – so it allows you to run your system on a graphics optimized profile for the graphics tests and a CPU optimized profile for the CPU tests. Hotkey OC is available for free and will work with every GIGABYTE motherboard currently in production.

Find out more from the official GIGABYTE press release, microsite or video. Overclocking-TV has also prepared a video with a live demonstration.

Very cool to find out that the GIGABYTE motherboard you purchased a year ago suddenly has additional features that come for free wouldn’t you say? Tell us what OC features you’d like to see on future GIGABYTE mobos by leaving a comment below.

Week 7 GIGABYTE Fans Discussion Winner of a GIGABYTE X58A-UD3R

Last week was quite a dramatical week for the FIFA World Cup quarter-finals, while tradition strong teams like Brazil, Argentina had lost to their competitors, and winning teams advancing to the semi-finals vying for the championship. However, in the Week 7 of Searching for GIGABYTE’s #1 Biggest Fan, we have a winner from Argentina! Congratulations to Andrés S. Miglio from the Buenos Aires – Argentina. You have won a brand new GIGABYTE X58A-UD3R motherboard!

The question for Week 7 was: Are you a Gamer? What type of games do you normally play on your PC? Example: FPS – Crysis, Online Games – World of Warcraft..etc. What features would you like to see on a Gaming Motherboard?

We have received lots of great ideas and inputs from you all and hopefully your ideas will be implement in our future products, thanks everyone!

Gaming, gaming and gaming! With GIGABYTE's company EVERYTHING is possible.

Gigabyte's high-end motherboards are the best performing ones because they are made to last thinking in all of those people trying to break out the limits of 3D graphics using the pure power as well as possible to make the game enthusiast be immersed into the extreme graphics and have the best gaming experience.

Cool things for me for Gigabyte motherboards? SURE! Maybe some are possible and some others may be a little crazy. So huge electronics knowledge it's necessary...but for gaming and gamers the battle field is open.

1) Game FPS Hardware Counter placed at the top of the first PCI-E x16 (up to down).

2) Hardware power consumption module (maybe not mounted on the motherboard) that shows also the variable load states and voltage line of all the connected devices such as video cards, drives, fans, memory, etc.

3) Visible device connectors with different blinking backlight colors depending on the type and color of the connector that shows the activity of the device, like memory connectors illuminated, SATA ports, all type of PCI-E connectors, etc. (like the UV effect).

4) Peltier system to cool down chipsets or any other components with heat pipes.

5) Exclusive gaming packaging, with more games bundles and the best configurations possible for them, GIGABYTE's Exclusive Gaming adhesives designs to stick them on the Case.

6) A kind of 'AUTO BOOST' button to instantly OVERCLOCK the hardware to the more extreme, optimal, and stable configuration automaticaly for the time of gaming to acquire the very best according to the user hardware installed.

7) The creation of a GIGABYTE Exclusive Gaming character… to be represented on all gaming platforms with GIGABYTE’s products inside.

8) As my favorite games are all type of racing games...like all Need For Speed's,Dirt2, Grid, Fuel, Burnout, Split Second, Blur, etc. and I'm a fan of them and I love to enjoy the best gaming quality that GIGABYTE offers to me....It would be great a software utility from GIGABYTE to control all the gaming devices in only one application such as driving wheels, joysticks, gamepads etc. and to be able to make profiles depending on the gamers choice, like personalized profiles..

Good job
GIGABYTE! I’m a fan!

We are sure that you will have greater gaming experience on this new X58A-UD3R motherboard, Andrés.

For those of you who did not win this week's X58A-UD3R or have just learned about our Search for GIGABYTE’s #1 Biggest Fan event, don't worry, we will be give away including 3 GIGABYTE X58 motherboards, as well as the grand prize of a trip to Taiwan for GO OC 2010. So, keep coming back each week for the win! Visit facebook.com/GIGABYTEmotherboards to enter!

GIGABYTE motherboard team donates some X58A-UD3R boards for a good cause

A good friend of mine, Dave, known better as movieman on XtremeSystems, is a strong supporter of finding a cure for cancer and other diseases by "crunching" numbers on "World Community Grid" or WCG. He mentioned in one of our chats that if GIGABYTE was to have some spare boards around he would find them a good home with people dedicated to the cause. GIGABYTE sent 6x WCG members our X58A-UD3R(rev2.0) boards and they have already been put to good use and are crunching away as we speak.

You can read some more about it here:
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=254678

The martial art of overclocking – Go OC China 2010

image

Over the years we’ve held Go OC events in some pretty cool places such as Bangkok, Beijing, Prague, Jakarta, etc… This year is no different because on June 25th the Go OC China regional final was held in an ancient Buddhist monastery rumored to be the secret meeting place of martial artists who come to fight for the glory of being the best fighter in the region. A very apt location for Go OC don’t you think?

image

When all was said and done Stephen Yeong from Team HK-Centralfield (Hong Kong) emerged the champion with Wing from team Speedtime (Beijing) and Hero Ou from Team China (Guangzhou) taking 2nd the 3rd places respectively.

You can visit the official Go OC 2010 China regional final  website here and there is a comprehensive write up on xtremesystems.org with loads of interesting pictures.

Gigabyte's Cloud OC App Uses Netbooks to Tweak Performance

image

At Computex we gave a sneak preview of Cloud OC; a ground breaking software application that allows you to keep an eye on your system settings (fan speeds, CPU & memory temps, voltages, etc…) while running any of the 3DMark benchmarks that automatically run in full screen mode. It also allows you to tweak your system settings while you run the benchmark and even restart, shut down, suspend or hibernate your system after benching. I think the key advantage with this app is actually that you can fiddle with the settings without activating your keyboard or mouse. Theoretically, any keyboard or mouse activation requires a little interference with the OS, and any interference during a benchmark is not preferable.

Enough about that, here’s a short video from Nicole (She Geek) at netbooknews.com, that explains how Cloud OC works and what it does. Stay tuned for more about Cloud OC because the launch is going to be very soon!
